SUMMARY:Bells Mill Road Clean up for MLK and Earth Days
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Bells Mill Road and Forbidden Drive\nParking: Bell’s Mill Road will be closed starting at 7:00 am\, so please plan where you’ll park ahead of time! There is plenty of neighborhood street parking near the Manatawna and Northwestern Trailheads\, but any parking location will require hiking into our meeting location. See map for details.\nBathrooms: There should be porta-potties on Forbidden Drive and Bells Mill Road. \nJoin Friends of the Wissahickon in celebrating BOTH Earth Day and Martin Luther King Jr Day (after having to cancel our service day in January) with a special large-scale clean-up along Bells Mill Road! For this effort\, the Road will be closed from Lykens Lane to Germantown Avenue\, providing volunteers with safe access to a heavily traveled road. By removing litter along the roadway\, we can prevent trash from washing into the creek during rainstorms and help protect habitat and stream health. \nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Litter clean-up\n• Hiking up to 2 miles (we’ll be traveling up and down Bells Mill Road picking up trash) \nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and remember to bring water with you. Detailed information and confirmation of the meeting location will be sent by email one business day before the event. If you are hoping to bring a group of 5 or more people\, please reach out to us first. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org.

SUMMARY:The Clover Lead Challenge: A Choose-Your-Own-Distance Hike
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Valley Green Inn\nFour leaf clovers are special and a recognized symbol of luck and rarity. Join Trail Ambassadors Lisa Kleiman\, Susie Gettes\, Debra Brackett\, and Margaret Kinnevy for a cloverleaf-shaped hike exploring four quadrants of Wissahickon Valley Park—hike 1\, 2 3\, or all 4 ‘leaves’—there is a distance for everyone! How many can you complete!? \nOur hiking adventure will start at Valley Green Inn. We will hike a cloverleaf loop\, returning to Valley Green after completing each of the 4 different loops\, passing many Wissahickon landmarks along the way. At the end of each loop\, you can choose to continue onto the next loop\, or call it a day! Mileage options will be approximately 3.5\, 6\, 8.5 and 11 miles. Anticipated elevation for the first half of the hike is 600 feet\, and approximately 1000 feet for the full 11 mile hike. \nThe terrain is hilly with rocks and roots\, and depending on the weather the trails may be muddy as well\, so come prepared! Our route will provide hikers with the opportunity to hike both alongside and high above the creek\, affording beautiful springtime views. Restrooms available at the beginning and end of each loop at Valley Green. Hikers should come prepared with plenty of water and snacks\, and clothing layered for the weather. \nDistance: 3.5/6/8.5/11 miles\nDifficulty Level: Moderate-Difficult (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: Ages 18+\nParking: There are three lots near the Inn. The northern parking lot can be accessed by Wises Mill Road\, and the southern by Valley Green Road. Overflow parking is in the Upper Lot.\nRestrooms: There should be bathrooms available outside of the Inn. \nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.

SUMMARY:WPA in the Wissahickon Part 1 with Debra Brackett\, Peter Curatolo\, and Doug Gibson
DESCRIPTION:WPA in the Wissahickon: Wonderful Park Assets or Worrisome Park Additions – Part I\nMeeting at Northwestern Avenue and Forbidden Drive (see map here)\n*This hike was initially scheduled for February 22. If you were signed up already\, you do not need to register again.* \nEver walk past a structure in the Wissahickon and observe a cornerstone with the initials WPA and a date? WPA is short for the Works Progress Administration\, a federal New Deal program during the Great Depression that helped provide jobs for unemployed workers. Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon Valley were sites for multiple WPA projects and some controversy. \nJoin us for a loop walk that includes stops at several structures built by WPA workers. We’ll share highlights\, some history about the buildings\, and the controversy about the scope of work in the Wissahickon. This hike is part one of a series and will focus on the northern section of the park. The route includes some steep and rocky ascents and descents and is about 5 miles long. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult; no dogs except for service animals\, please. \nDistance: 5 miles \nDifficulty Level: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces) \nAudience: Ages 12+ \nParking: There should be plenty of parking in the nearby Northwestern Ave Parking Area. \nRestrooms: There will not be bathrooms available for use during our hike. \nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery.
