It also represents the return of the light\, and there is an opportunity to call in what we need.\nWe look forward to celebrating this opportunity to heal and set our intentions for the year to come. Bring your bright spirit to help us collectively illuminate the darkness together.\n  \nJaffna\n\nJaffna is an acoustic\, ethnic fusion ensemble that plays original music. This Philadelphia-based world music ensemble combines instrumentation and influences from the Middle East\, India\, and anywhere else that inspires them. With roots in the early 1990s\, the group maintains its distinct style with original compositions and improvisations that stretch the boundaries of their respective cultures. Jaffna has produced 2 CDs of original music and its members maintain a high level of activity in many world music projects such as Barakka\, One\, Hindugrass\, Arehm and Atzilut. \nJaffna musicians have created a musical universe with oud\, guitar\, tabla\, and dumbek\, where they can all argue\, eat and stay good friends.  Along with the strong Mid-East and Indian flavor come unmistakable flamenco\, rock\, Balkan\, and jazz influences\, the result of jamming in and around the vibrant Philadelphia world music scene for years. \n \nJaffna Sites:\nFacebook\nMusic \n  \nGRUPO SUMAK DE PHILADELPHIA\n \nWe are a Philly-based band made up of immigrants from Latin America. DESCRIPTION:Happy holidays\, everyone!! \n• \nCome and join the RoxYunk Carolers! We are open to anyone who wishes to sing\, with any level of singing experience. We will be going door-to-door throughout neighborhood and surprising our neighbors with a song at their doorstep! \n• \nWe will try to evoke the “traditional” caroling experience with capes\, top hats\, and other Victorian garb. (No need to be in full costume or anything\, but think “nice suit jacket” rather than “neon Christmas sweater”). \nWe will start in a different location each night from Dec 21 to Dec 25\, meeting at 5pm and visiting well-lit and decorated houses until around 8pm (or whenever we get tuckered out). \nIf anyone wishes to join\, we will have two preparation sessions at Harmonie Hall where we will be handing out lyric sheets and practicing to be sure we are familiar with the material. These are Monday December 15th and Thursday December 18th at 6pm.  \nClarifying note on suggested garb: Victorian garb is appreciated but not strictly required. Do your best to come as an old fashioned caroler\, if you have a cape\, cloak\, cane\, top hat\, flat cap\, bonnet\, etc! If not\, something nice will do just as well – suit jacket\, cable knit sweater\, fur coat\, whatever you have on hand! We are just going for less of a “red blinking nose” or “neon ugly sweater” vibe and veering toward more “nice holiday party” wear. \nOther suggested things to bring: flameless candles and fake oil lamps – no real fire\, please. Sleigh bells or other hand held percussion\, or any instrument of your choice if you wish to play along.

Having pioneered the live music scene at the legendary South Street venue Bacchanal\, Philly Gumbo was often joined by such special guests as Todd Rundgren\, David Lindley\, Teddy Royal of Fats Domino’s band\, members of Harold Melvin & The Blues Notes’ band and others.  In addition\, members of Philly Gumbo have played with such legends as Little Milton\, Wilson Pickett\, Bo Diddley and Big Youth. \n       “Philly Gumbo’s long-term popularity has come from two things\,” notes founding member Randall Grass: “an ability to play an authentic and unique mix of New Orleans \nR & B\, funk\, reggae\, blues and soul\, and the presence of great singers\, such as Brenda Smith\, Walt Taylor\, Jeannie Brooks\, Richard Johnson\, and current lead vocalist India Rex.” \n     Formed in late 1980\, the band quickly developed a following at the Germantown club \nTakers Café with a unique mix of music reminiscent of New Orleans group The Neville Brothers.  As such\, the group pioneered the popularity of New Orleans music in Philadelphia\, with a celebrated weekly gig at Bacchanal for nearly a decade.
