SUMMARY:RoxYunk Caroling Practice Session
DESCRIPTION:Happy holidays\, everyone!! \n• \nCome and join the RoxYunk Carolers! We are open to anyone who wishes to sing\, with any level of singing experience. We will be going door-to-door throughout neighborhood and surprising our neighbors with a song at their doorstep! \n• \nWe will try to evoke the “traditional” caroling experience with capes\, top hats\, and other Victorian garb. (No need to be in full costume or anything\, but think “nice suit jacket” rather than “neon Christmas sweater”). \nWe will start in a different location each night from Dec 21 to Dec 25\, meeting at 5pm and visiting well-lit and decorated houses until around 8pm (or whenever we get tuckered out). \nIf anyone wishes to join\, we will have two preparation sessions at Harmonie Hall where we will be handing out lyric sheets and practicing to be sure we are familiar with the material. These are Monday December 15th and Thursday December 18th at 6pm.  \nClarifying note on suggested garb: Victorian garb is appreciated but not strictly required. Do your best to come as an old fashioned caroler\, if you have a cape\, cloak\, cane\, top hat\, flat cap\, bonnet\, etc! If not\, something nice will do just as well – suit jacket\, cable knit sweater\, fur coat\, whatever you have on hand! We are just going for less of a “red blinking nose” or “neon ugly sweater” vibe and veering toward more “nice holiday party” wear. \nOther suggested things to bring: flameless candles and fake oil lamps – no real fire\, please. Sleigh bells or other hand held percussion\, or any instrument of your choice if you wish to play along.

SUMMARY:Jaffna and Grupo Sumak De Philadelphia at The Fallser
DESCRIPTION:Winter solstice is the darkest day of the year. In the darkness\, there is an opportunity to let go of things that no longer serve us. It also represents the return of the light\, and there is an opportunity to call in what we need.\nWe look forward to celebrating this opportunity to heal and set our intentions for the year to come. Bring your bright spirit to help us collectively illuminate the darkness together.\n  \nJaffna\n\nJaffna is an acoustic\, ethnic fusion ensemble that plays original music. This Philadelphia-based world music ensemble combines instrumentation and influences from the Middle East\, India\, and anywhere else that inspires them. With roots in the early 1990s\, the group maintains its distinct style with original compositions and improvisations that stretch the boundaries of their respective cultures. Jaffna has produced 2 CDs of original music and its members maintain a high level of activity in many world music projects such as Barakka\, One\, Hindugrass\, Arehm and Atzilut. \nJaffna musicians have created a musical universe with oud\, guitar\, tabla\, and dumbek\, where they can all argue\, eat and stay good friends.  Along with the strong Mid-East and Indian flavor come unmistakable flamenco\, rock\, Balkan\, and jazz influences\, the result of jamming in and around the vibrant Philadelphia world music scene for years. \n \nJaffna Sites:\nFacebook\nMusic \n  \nGRUPO SUMAK DE PHILADELPHIA\n \nWe are a Philly-based band made up of immigrants from Latin America. We play music inspired from Peruvian chicha and Colombian cumbia and infuse it with the grit and flavor of the beautiful city of Philadelphia. We like to get people dancing in joy and rebellion as we play hypnotic grooves and psychedelic electric guitars. \n  \n \nhttps://www.instagram.com/grupo_sumak_de_philadelphia \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAes5ZXWpsU

SUMMARY:The Fallser Pressnts - African Friends: Bakithi Kumalo\, Tanyaradzwa Tawengwa\, and Youba Cissokho
DESCRIPTION:African Friends: A chance meeting developed into a deep friendship and a beautiful musical partnership. \nThis five-piece band will warm your heart and get your feet moving.\n\n \n \nTanyaradzwa Tawengwa\n   \nTanyaradzwa is a visionary leader committed to African liberation. She is a scholar\, healer\, composer\, singer\, and Zimbabwean gwenyambira (mbira player) \nShe holds a Doctorate of Music in Voice Performance\,  a Master of Music in Voice Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition (cum laude) with minors in Voice Performance and French. \nTanyaradzwa did her undergraduate studies at Princeton University and her graduate studies at the University of Kentucky.  At both institutions\, she was the first Zimbabwean in history to graduate with degrees in music. \nShe recently returned to Princeton University where she was awarded the prestigious Hodder Fellowship by the Lewis Center for the Arts. This is a creative fellowship that was previously awarded to Danai Gurira and Nora Chipaumire – two immensely gifted ZImbabwean artists who inspired her. It is such an honour to be following in their artistic footsteps. \nShe is now an inaugural START Fellow at Princeton University. \nGrowing up in Harare\, Zimbabwe as the granddaughter of entrepreneur George Chirume Tawengwa – founder of the Mushandirapamwe Hotel\, the first Black-owned hotel in Highfield\, Harare (formerly Salisbury) – Tanyaradzwa was inspired by a spirit of entrepreneurship and collaboration from a young age. She was also surrounded by music; her maternal great-grandfather had been a choral conductor\, and both sides of her family enjoyed music-making. \n“I perform for audiences all over the world\, but my songs are for my people. When I call on the ancestral melodies that are held in our soil\, our trees\, our hearts\, and our blood\, I know that we are all healing – one note at a time. ” \nLinkedin \nFacebook \n  \n  \nBakithi Kumalo\n \nBassist Bakithi presents a joyful musical journey from the Roots and Rhythms of South Africa. Bakithi Kumalo always brings the most talented artists together for the ultimate musical experience that promises to move you in multiple ways.  He has just completed a US tour with his lifelong friend\, Paul Simon. \nFound at the heart and soul of modern-day anthems that have shaped our sense of music and culture as we know it\, award-winning\, multi-instrumentalist Bakithi Kumalo (Bah-Gee-Tee Koo-Ma-Low) is ranked among the top 50 bass players in the world by Bass Player Magazine. \nBorn in the Soweto township of Johannesburg\, South Africa\, and surrounded by relatives who loved music and actively performed\, with traditional African rhythms and acappella vocal groups all around him. Kumalo learned to follow the groove of the bass lines and developed licks based on the left-hand work of accordion players in the township bands. Landing his first job at the age of seven filling in for his uncle’s bass player\, he continued to work as a session musician in South Africa during the 1970s and early 1980s and was soon recognized as a top session bassist\, accompanying international performers during their South African tours. \nIntroduced to Paul Simon through producer Hendrick Lebone during recording sessions for the Graceland album in 1985\, Kumalo traveled with Simon to New York to finish the record. Following accompaniment on the premier tour\, he spent several years commuting between Soweto and New York City before permanently settling in the United States. \nWith a career spent touring alongside artists including Hugh Masekela\, the Grateful Dead\, Sting\, Stevie Wonder\, John Legend\, Gloria Estefan\, Derek Trucks\, Miriam Makeba\, and many others\, his abilities extend to his solo work as a singer\, percussionist\, pianist\, and songwriter—in addition to his bass playing—presenting a culmination of diverse influences from throughout his life. Touring regularly with Simon throughout his career\, Kumalo has recorded with and performed alongside artists including Joan Baez\, Cyndi Lauper\, Hugh Masekela\, Herbie Hancock\, Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Randy Brecker\, Grover Washington Jr.\, Mickey Hart\, and Disney’s The Lion King. \nBest known for his groundbreaking bass line in “You Can Call Me Al\,” pocket grooves from “Boy In The Bubble” and “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes\,” and his overall big bass sound\, Kumalo has also released several solo albums. His most recent project had him working alongside producer Maxfeld Gast and Militia Hill to create What You Hear Is What You See. \n  \nYouba Cissokho\n\nYOUBA CISSOKHO plays the kora\, a type of harp made from a calabash gourd. West African kings commissioned the kora to recount songs of folklore and love. \nYouba fluently plays traditional Mandinka and Wolof music as well as a modern style made up of jazz\, reggae\, and Afro beats. His lilting sound and expansive range come from a lifelong exposure to rich musical diversity. His father is Issa Cissokho\, the saxophone player for the legendary world music group Orchestra Baobab\, which blended Latin and Caribbean music with West African styles. \nYouba has performed solo all over Africa\, Europe\, and the United States including Paris\, New York\, and Dakar. He also joined Artist-In-Residence and LINES Ballet dancer Adji Cissoko on Center Stage at the Vail Dance Festival and frequently accompanies the Temple University ballet classes and orchestras.
