SUMMARY:Dervish at the Fallser
DESCRIPTION:Dervish\n \n  \nAt the end of 2019 Dervish received a prestigious lifetime achievement award from the BBC\, a fitting tribute to the band after over 30 years of recording and performing all over the world. Described by the BBC as “an icon of Irish music”\, the band have played at festivals from Rio to Glastonbury. They accompanied the Irish President on state visits to Latvia and Lithuania and Prime Minister of Ireland on a trade mission to China as Cultural Ambassadors taking time out to play an impromptu session on the Great Wall of China. Dervish have a line-up which includes some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians\, fronted by one of the country’s best-known singers\, Cathy Jordan. \nThe Guardian newspaper commented: “Dervish are simply brilliant. . they carry Irish history with them.” Dervish are long-established as one of the biggest names in Irish music internationally. They’re renowned for live performances\, which match dazzling sets of tunes with stunning interpretations of traditional songs.  Their studio and live albums – 13 to date – make up one of the outstanding catalogues in Irish music. \nThey are regular visitors to the US\, performing sell out shows from coast to coast. However\, their fan base stretches across several continents\, including Europe\, Asia\, and South America. They were the first Irish band to play the world’s biggest music festival\, Rock in Rio\, performing to an estimated 250\,000 people. Over the years they’ve been on the same bill as artists such as James Brown\, Neil Young\, Sting and even Iron Maiden! In 2018 Dervish are still busy touring internationally and still making plans. The band are excited about signing for the renowned US roots label Rounder Records and will be releasing their first album on the label in 2018 featuring guest appearances by artists including Vince Gill\, Steve Earl\, David Gray and many others. \nAll six members of Dervish are steeped in the musical traditions of counties Sligo and Leitrim in north-west Ireland. It’s an area which matches Atlantic coastline with storied mountains and rural landscapes. It has inspired a host of musicians\, artists and writers\, including the Nobel Prize-winning poet W. B. Yeats. \nIn 2004 Dervish were given their home towns highest honour when they were given the freedom of Sligo City in a civic reception\, an accolade they share with Yeats himself\, Michael Flatley and Countess Markievicz. Dervish were formed in 1989 when four of the founding members met while playing informal sessions in the pubs of Sligo. – Shane Mitchell (accordion)\,Liam Kelly (flute/whistle)\, Brian McDonagh (mandola/mandolin) and Michael Holmes (bouzouki). They were soon joined by Roscommon born singer and bodhran (drum) player Cathy Jordan\, and later by all Ireland Fiddle Champion Tom Morrow in 1998. It’s a remarkable and at times electric combination – “capable of playing with note-perfect accuracy and perfect control at nearly supersonic levels” (Irish Voice\, New York). \nBut Dervish marry technical brilliance with a rare sensibility\, born of an understanding of the music and many years of playing together. The Irish Times said their “integrity makes the group a formidable heir to the throne abandoned by The Bothy Band\, if not a serious contender for The Chieftains’ international space.” The News Journal (Delaware) described Dervish as: “The most compelling\, most soulful Irish traditional folk band playing today. If you ever find yourself in the beautiful town of Sligo on the wild Atlantic way\, check out the music sessions that take place in many establishments. The members of Dervish enjoy playing tunes back where it all began. \n\n  \nDervish Social:\nFacebook \nInstagram \nSpotify \n  \nClick Here for Tickets

SUMMARY:Vance GIlbert at the Fallser
DESCRIPTION:Vance Gilbert\n \nIf Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert”\, says Richmond Magazine. \n \nVance’s new album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals\, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars\, and Americana-Roots master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh. With 4 bullies\, 4 deaths (3 of them murders)\, 3 moms\, 2 accidents\, 2 Black people\, 2 dogs\, 1 dog ball\,\, and 1 missed flight thanks to gas station sushi\, this album benefits from the gifts of time and experience honing songwriting skills that put this most vital of acoustic storytellers at the top of the game. \n \nOh\, and Management wants to make sure to tell you that this is the 14th release for this acoustic stalwart. \n \nOne of the originators of the finally recognized R&B/Folk/Jazz crossover-sub-genre\, Vance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&B and jazz singer once at college\, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Word spread like wildfire about Gilbert’s stage-owning singing and playing\, and Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her 1992 Fat City tour where he took much of America by storm and by surprise. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god..” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. \nNoted not only for being the ever consummate performer\, Gilbert has recorded 13 albums\, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records. Along with being opener of choice for artists as varied as Arlo Guthrie\, Anita Baker\, The Milk Carton Kids\, and Southside Johnny\, the mid 2000’s found Gilbert opening 150+ shows for comedian George Carlin. \nGilbert has also been a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings and halls\, among them the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Rocky Mountain\, Calgary\, Ottawa\, and Falcon Ridge Folk festivals\, the Kate Wolf Music Festival\, and Australia’s Woodford Folk and Mullum Music Festivals\, Mountain Stage\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Nashville’s Lyman Auditorium\, The Barns at Wolftrap\, and a private party for his veterinarian where there was terrific lo-mein. \n\nhttps://vancegilbert.com/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/vancegilbertmusic \nhttps://www.instagram.com/vancevancevance/

SUMMARY:The Legacy of Philadelphia House Music with Lady Alma\, Ursula Rucker\, Carla Gamble\, & DJ Sylo at the Fallser
DESCRIPTION:Lady Alma\nHouse Music mainstay LADY ALMA is one of the many reasons Philadelphia’s sonic scene is so world-renowned\, her uplifting anthems are considered instantly infectious wherever they’re heard. The Philly songstress has made a worldwide name for herself with her eclectic and uplifting musical repertoire. LADY ALMA is known for a range of uniquely inspirational jams – among them “Happiness”\, “Believe”\, “Chances”\, “Hold It Down”\, and “Peace You’ll Find”. Fans of LADY ALMA recognize not only the magic of her skillful vocal arches but also her amazing songs\, and motivating messages amid a firm foundation for the extensive musical and vocal instruction gleaned from illustrious Philadelphia institutions such as the Girard Academic Music Program\, Settlement Music School and the renowned Freedom Theater\, where she also studied theater and dance. SUMMARY:Jaffna and Grupo Sumak De Philadelphia at The Fallser
DESCRIPTION:Winter solstice is the darkest day of the year. In the darkness\, there is an opportunity to let go of things that no longer serve us. It also represents the return of the light\, and there is an opportunity to call in what we need.\nWe look forward to celebrating this opportunity to heal and set our intentions for the year to come. Bring your bright spirit to help us collectively illuminate the darkness together.\n  \nJaffna\n\nJaffna is an acoustic\, ethnic fusion ensemble that plays original music. This Philadelphia-based world music ensemble combines instrumentation and influences from the Middle East\, India\, and anywhere else that inspires them. With roots in the early 1990s\, the group maintains its distinct style with original compositions and improvisations that stretch the boundaries of their respective cultures. Jaffna has produced 2 CDs of original music and its members maintain a high level of activity in many world music projects such as Barakka\, One\, Hindugrass\, Arehm and Atzilut. \nJaffna musicians have created a musical universe with oud\, guitar\, tabla\, and dumbek\, where they can all argue\, eat and stay good friends.  Along with the strong Mid-East and Indian flavor come unmistakable flamenco\, rock\, Balkan\, and jazz influences\, the result of jamming in and around the vibrant Philadelphia world music scene for years. \n \nJaffna Sites:\nFacebook\nMusic \n  \nGRUPO SUMAK DE PHILADELPHIA\n \nWe are a Philly-based band made up of immigrants from Latin America. We play music inspired from Peruvian chicha and Colombian cumbia and infuse it with the grit and flavor of the beautiful city of Philadelphia. We like to get people dancing in joy and rebellion as we play hypnotic grooves and psychedelic electric guitars. \n  \n \nhttps://www.instagram.com/grupo_sumak_de_philadelphia \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAes5ZXWpsU

Youba\, a master of the 21-stringed kora\, carries forward his\nfamily’s musical legacy\, guided by his father\, legendary saxophonist Issa Cissokho. Aba\, a griot on both sides of his lineage\, channels the power of the sabar drum through jazz\, rock\, and Sufi mysticism\, having performed with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Youssou N’Dour. DESCRIPTION:Tickets $20 online\, $25 at the door (online tickets end at 4:30 pm on the day of the show)\n  \nListen to amazing live music and get to bed early- an adult dream come true.\n  \n  \nPJ Brown and Her Resistance\n  \nLike a band of misfits heeding the clarion call of Philadelphia’s most revered musical ghosts\, PJ Brown and Her Resistance assembled for the first time (feat. members of WPJO and the legendary Martha Graham Cracker) for a sold out show at World Café Live! What started as a full-steam homage to Miss Sharon Jones took a left turn when the wheels fell off and the ship lifted high above Love Park \, clipping the hat off that bird-dropping-covered statue of William Penn and straight into the sun.  \nPJ Brown and Her Resistance continues its mission to spread love and music – To celebrate lost souls\, excited shapeshifters\, perennial drifters\, aspiring troublemakers.  and unapologetic agents of change.  \nIt’s troubled soul music\, taped-together rock and roll\, basement party funk—it’s dark as night and light as day—and all of it is for you! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nNEW MUSIC!\n\n\n\n\n\nThe band is excited to announce the release of two new songs\, “Deeper and Deeper” and “Pink Elephants” – \n\nhttps://www.pjbhr.com/ \nInstagram \nFacebook \nSpotify

SUMMARY:The Fallser Presents Judy Paster and The Fractals
DESCRIPTION:Tickets $20 online and $25 at the door (Online tickets end at 6pm on the day of the show.)\nDoors at 7pm\nTickets\n \nTickets for good\, not greed \n100% of profits from your small booking fee helps fund charities providing education\, healthcare and basic necessities to humans across the globe! \n  \n10% off Taqueria Crestawith your Fallser Club ticket!!\n  \nJudy Paster\n  \nJudy Paster is a Nashville-based\, Pennsylvania-grown Americana artist whose music carries the soul of her story—honest\, authentic\, and full of hope. She began writing songs at age 8\, using music to process pain\, faith\, and a longing for peace after a childhood marked by trauma and loss. Later\, her father’s battle with Alzheimer’s and a season of living on the road out West further shaped both her heart and her voice. \nHer debut with The Judy Paster Trio features two Grammy-winning members of The Time Jumpers\, weaving fiddle\, upright bass\, and acoustic guitar into a rich\, rootsy sound. Her songs have been featured in film and TV (Christmas Crush\, The Holiday Exchange\, Music City Mistletoe)\, and she first gained national attention when Billboard called her “an artist truly on the rise” following the release of her debut EP. Since moving to Nashville\, Judy has earned airplay\, carved out a place in the singer-songwriter scene\, and received multiple awards\, including the 2021 Josie Music Award for Folk/Americana Artist of the Year and a Canadian Covenant Award (Canada’s equivalent of the Dove Award) for co-writing Jazz Blues Song of the Year. \nShe has written and shared stages with some of Music City’s top writers\, released five albums (Judy Paster\, Stronger\, Rubies\, Rocks & Stones\, Like Stardust\, Road to the Sun)\, and several singles. Judy is also part of Women Behind the Lyrics—a national tour and upcoming reality TV series that follows the lives of\nfour female Country artists living and touring together. \nShe frequently performs at the world-famous Bluebird Cafe and has graced many of Nashville’s premier stages. Through it all\, her music remains a steady companion—for herself and for others—offering light\, strength\, and something real in a world that too often sells the opposite. \n \n \n  \n@judypastermusic \nInstagram \nFacebook \nSpotify \nYouTube  \n  \n  \nThe Fractals\n   \nPhotos: Lisa Schaffer \nGuess what happens when a trio of three martini lunches staggers toward a ragged copy of “Respect For Acting\,” stumbling over bellbottom into plasticine porters\, hissing like 8-Tracks\, knocking over emo kids with Flying Vees? The Fractals\, that’s what happens\, and they have been happening for ten years. Tearing it up mercilessly in a cyclonic maelstrom of Stevie-cum-Angus-cum-Fagan\, with outer bands of Zeppelin and Trane\, the whirling dervish that is The Fractals is not to be ignored. Kevin Hanson\, lead singer and songwriter\, has performed and recorded with the likes of Usher\, Jay-Z\, The Roots\, Musiq Soulchild and countless others. He appears in the acclaimed films “Fade To Black” as a band member for Jay-Z’s “farewell concert) and Dave Chappelle’s “Block Party” as a member of the house band . His distinctive songwriting is what has drawn so many to both Huffamoose and his current band. His compositions and masterful guitar playing are the spinal cord of The Fractals. Jim Stager\, bassist\, has performed and recorded with hundreds of artists\, ranging from Rosemary Clooney (!) to the legendary punk band “X”. His mastery of rock and jazz merge in a style that has earned him a place in the pantheon of Philadelphia’s notable session greats. \nErik Johnson\, drummer\, has performed or recorded with countless artists in myriad styles. His credits include: Ben Schachter’s Trio of Many\, George Garzone\, Tim Hagans\, Jack Walrath\, Gary Bartz\, John Swana\, Jef Lee Johnson\, Ralph Bowen\, Larry McKenna\, Jim Ridl\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Kurt Elling\, Gerald Veasley\, Lelia Broussard\, Liz Longley. In addition to his legendary status as a jazz virtuoso\, his drumming has served  as the heartbeat for a striking range of\nPhiladelphia’s singer-songwriter community. His fiercely original expressiveness on drums and soaring background vocals have\nbecome vital to The Fractals’ sound. The Fractals have recently completed their first full-length offering\, “Heavy Rotation” and are currently performing in the Philly area in support of their new release. Their live performances are not to be missed\, and their shows have gained notoriety among local musicians and fans alike as remarkable musical events. \n \n  \n  \nWebsite: https://thefractalsband.com/\nYouTube\nFacebook\nInstagram

SUMMARY:The Fallser Presents - Philly Gumbo: New Orleans R & B\, Funk\, Reggae\, Blues and Soul
DESCRIPTION:Tickets $20 online and $25 at the door \n  \nTicket\n(opens in a new tab) \nTickets for good\, not greed\nWe have partnered with Humanitix. 100% of profits from your small booking fee helps fund charities providing education\, healthcare\, and basic necessities to humans across the globe!\n\n10% off Taqueria Crestawith your Fallser Club ticket!!\n  \nPhilly Gumbo’s distinctive blend of New Orleans R & B\, funk\, reggae\, blues and soul has made it a unique and popular presence on the Philadelphia music scene for thirty years.  Over the years\, the band has been a “Best Of” selection by Philadelphia Magazine in their annual “Best Of Philadelphia” issues as well as having played most of the top venues in the area such as The Kimmel Center\, The Sellersville Theater and World Café Live and such major events as the Atlantic City Summer Jazz Festival\, Musikfest\,  Jambalaya Jam\, Jam On The River\, WRTI-FM’s Groovin’ In The Park\, the Media Blues Stroll\, The West Oak Lane Jazz & Arts Festival and many more. Philly Gumbo has opened for such greats as Dr. John\, Buddy Guy &  Jr. Wells\, Rick Danko & Levon Helm of The Band and Mutabaruka. Having pioneered the live music scene at the legendary South Street venue Bacchanal\, Philly Gumbo was often joined by such special guests as Todd Rundgren\, David Lindley\, Teddy Royal of Fats Domino’s band\, members of Harold Melvin & The Blues Notes’ band and others.  In addition\, members of Philly Gumbo have played with such legends as Little Milton\, Wilson Pickett\, Bo Diddley and Big Youth. \n       “Philly Gumbo’s long-term popularity has come from two things\,” notes founding member Randall Grass: “an ability to play an authentic and unique mix of New Orleans \nR & B\, funk\, reggae\, blues and soul\, and the presence of great singers\, such as Brenda Smith\, Walt Taylor\, Jeannie Brooks\, Richard Johnson\, and current lead vocalist India Rex.” \n     Formed in late 1980\, the band quickly developed a following at the Germantown club \nTakers Café with a unique mix of music reminiscent of New Orleans group The Neville Brothers.  As such\, the group pioneered the popularity of New Orleans music in Philadelphia\, with a celebrated weekly gig at Bacchanal for nearly a decade. The band released its debut single “Holy War b/w Mardi Gras” in 1984 and contributed the original song “Xmas In New Orleans” to the Seasons Greetings Philadelphia benefit CD in 1999. \nFour members of  Philly Gumbo—drummer Tim Hayes\, bassist Bert Harris\, guitarist Pete Eshelman and keyboardist Randall Grass–have been the core of the band since the beginning while saxophonist Richard Orr often sat in with the band as early as the 80’s and vocalist extraordinaire India Rex\, is the latest in a long line of exceptional vocalists. The band released a new CD “Come And Get It” in 2011. A Philly Gumbo performance makes a great listening experience\, with its ever-shifting mix of New Orleans R & B\, blues\, jazz\, funk\, reggae\, soul\, and even African music\, but is equally suited for dancing. \nThe band appeals to a people of all ages and backgrounds. In fact\, it is difficult to resist getting up and shaking your groove thing to Philadelphia’s greatest groove band! \nFacebook
