It’s our annual neighborhood potluck get-together\, September 27\, 2ish until 9:30 ish Outside\, in the glorious Fall weather. 245 Krams Ave.  \nThis party started as Neighbor Andrew’s 50th Birthday party. It’s now his 6th 50th birthday party. Make sure to wish him a happy birthday. It’s also Eliot’s 2nd Annual 59th Birthday celebration.  \nBring something to share\, eats or drinks\, if you’re inclined. We will have burgers and dogs and veggie sausage and beer and soft drinks and water. Probably some other treats too. Bring it raw. The grill will be hot and we will cook it. The bring is not mandatory. If you’re hungry\, come and eat. \nChildren and well behaved pets are welcome.  \nFeel free to bring any neighbors\, friends\, relatives\, or anyone at all if they’ll make the evening better. The space unites Calder’s art with architecture\, nature\, and activations that nurture different ways of thinking\, feeling\, and understanding. \nThe opening parade begins at noon at LOVE Park near City Hall\, which features the famous bronze statue of William Penn by Calder’s grandfather Alexander Milne Calder. It continues along the Parkway\, past the landmark Swann Memorial Fountain by Calder’s father Alexander Stirling Calder\, and concludes in Maja Park near Calder Gardens with a free concert at 1pm by the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra. \nThe parade’s lineup features an unprecedented ensemble of Philadelphia-based performers and artists\, including Pig Iron Theatre\, Almanac Dance Circus Theatre\, Mad Beatz Philly with youth drumlines\, and Brazilian percussion ensemble PHonk!. Together\, these artists will activate the city with music\, movement\, theater\, and spectacle\, guided by Arto Lindsay’s conceptual framework for the event. \nThe idea of a parade is deeply rooted in the history and spirit of Calder Gardens\, honoring the Calder family’s ancestry in Philadelphia and the city’s vibrant arts scene. He fell in love with the saxophone and the music attached to it later in life\, well after college. With a day job as a graphic designer in place\, he bought a King Zephyr tenor and began lessons with Joe Fortunato\, a tenor man from his South Philly neigborhood. \nFirst influences were soul and R&B players such as Maceo Parker and Junior Walker. Early projects were with small sections in the Philly and New York Ska scene. He and Mike Hood formed a close friendship in those years. As a result\, Lou has been a dedicated member of the Hoppin’ John Orchestra ever since. \nLou has performed and recorded with the likes of Public Service\, Ruder Than You\, The Toasters\, Marah\, Dr Ketchup\, The Gone Combo\, The Kandy Whales\, The Odean Pope Saxophone Choir and The Newdelphia Saxophone Quartet.  \nLou doesn’t play the saxophone as much as wresle it to the ground. Jazz\, blues and funk are where he feels at home. He currently stays busy with his groove based quartet called Buddy Boy. \nMIKE HOOD – Bass\, Trombone\, Composition & Arranging\nMichael has been a musical performer since the age of 9.  First mandolin\, then trombone\, then euphonium and since 1996\, bass.  Originally from piedmont North Carolina\, he has performed with the Temptations\, the Four Tops\, the Spinners\, Billy Paul\, Chuck Mangione\, the Captain and Tennille\, Nancy Sinatra\, The Hooters\, Bill Watrous\, Peter Erskine and many other national and local musicians.  As an endorsed Conn-Selmer Artist\, he plays Bach Stradivarius instruments exclusively.
