Bring your bright spirit to help us collectively illuminate the darkness together.\n  \nJaffna\n\nJaffna is an acoustic\, ethnic fusion ensemble that plays original music. This Philadelphia-based world music ensemble combines instrumentation and influences from the Middle East\, India\, and anywhere else that inspires them. With roots in the early 1990s\, the group maintains its distinct style with original compositions and improvisations that stretch the boundaries of their respective cultures. Jaffna has produced 2 CDs of original music and its members maintain a high level of activity in many world music projects such as Barakka\, One\, Hindugrass\, Arehm and Atzilut. \nJaffna musicians have created a musical universe with oud\, guitar\, tabla\, and dumbek\, where they can all argue\, eat and stay good friends.  Along with the strong Mid-East and Indian flavor come unmistakable flamenco\, rock\, Balkan\, and jazz influences\, the result of jamming in and around the vibrant Philadelphia world music scene for years. \n \nJaffna Sites:\nFacebook\nMusic \n  \nGRUPO SUMAK DE PHILADELPHIA\n \nWe are a Philly-based band made up of immigrants from Latin America. She began writing songs at age 8\, using music to process pain\, faith\, and a longing for peace after a childhood marked by trauma and loss. Later\, her father’s battle with Alzheimer’s and a season of living on the road out West further shaped both her heart and her voice. \nHer debut with The Judy Paster Trio features two Grammy-winning members of The Time Jumpers\, weaving fiddle\, upright bass\, and acoustic guitar into a rich\, rootsy sound. It’s our annual neighborhood potluck get-together\, September 27\, 2ish until 9:30 ish Outside\, in the glorious Fall weather. 245 Krams Ave.  \nThis party started as Neighbor Andrew’s 50th Birthday party. It’s now his 6th 50th birthday party. Make sure to wish him a happy birthday. It’s also Eliot’s 2nd Annual 59th Birthday celebration.  \nBring something to share\, eats or drinks\, if you’re inclined. We will have burgers and dogs and veggie sausage and beer and soft drinks and water. Probably some other treats too. Bring it raw. The grill will be hot and we will cook it. The bring is not mandatory. The space unites Calder’s art with architecture\, nature\, and activations that nurture different ways of thinking\, feeling\, and understanding. \nThe opening parade begins at noon at LOVE Park near City Hall\, which features the famous bronze statue of William Penn by Calder’s grandfather Alexander Milne Calder. It continues along the Parkway\, past the landmark Swann Memorial Fountain by Calder’s father Alexander Stirling Calder\, and concludes in Maja Park near Calder Gardens with a free concert at 1pm by the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra. \nThe parade’s lineup features an unprecedented ensemble of Philadelphia-based performers and artists\, including Pig Iron Theatre\, Almanac Dance Circus Theatre\, Mad Beatz Philly with youth drumlines\, and Brazilian percussion ensemble PHonk!. Together\, these artists will activate the city with music\, movement\, theater\, and spectacle\, guided by Arto Lindsay’s conceptual framework for the event. \nThe idea of a parade is deeply rooted in the history and spirit of Calder Gardens\, honoring the Calder family’s ancestry in Philadelphia and the city’s vibrant arts scene. Staged on the Parkway and free to all\, the parade celebrates collaboration\, experimentation\, and impermanence—values that were central to Calder’s own work and will guide the programming at Calder Gardens in the years ahead. \nCommissioned by Calder Gardens\, the event is conceived by Lindsay\, an artist\, musician\, and producer whose work blurs boundaries between music\, performance\, and visual art. Chaos and Kisses takes its name from his original score for the occasion\, which shapes the flow of the parade while leaving room for individual experiences and encounters. “Everyone knows what to expect from a parade\,” Lindsay says\, “which makes it the perfect place for the unexpected to appear.” By collaborating exclusively with local artists and communities\, Lindsay and Calder Gardens emphasize the importance of collective creation and place-based cultural production. \nPlease note: Calder Gardens opens September 21\, the day after the parade.
